Over the past month New Japan Pro Wrestling as been putting on the G1 Climax tournament to crown the new G1 Climax Champion. After 189 matches Hiroshi Tanahashi defeated Kota Ibushi in the finals to become the new G1 Climax Champion. This is the third time Hiroshi Tanahashi has been declared the G1 Climax Champion.

For those unfamiliar the G1 Climax is a tournament of the top heavyweights that New Japan Pro Wrestling has to offer, and the winner of the tournament gets to chose which heavyweight championship they want to challenge for at Wrestle Kingdom at the Toyko Dome. Tanahashi announced he will challenge for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 13.
The current IWGP Heavyweight Champion is Kenny Omega, so at it stands right now the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 13 will be Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Kenny Omega for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.
